Travel Advice

When traveling to Mexico, it's recommended to research your destination thoroughly, stay in well-lit tourist areas, be cautious at night, avoid displaying signs of wealth, learn basic Spanish, check for local safety advisories, only drink bottled water, consider travel insurance, and consult your doctor about necessary vaccinations; depending on the area you're visiting, you might also want to be mindful of road conditions and avoid traveling late at night.

Safety

  • Stay in well-known tourist zones. 

  • Be vigilant in crowded areas, especially at night. 

  • Avoid showing off valuables. 

  • Tell trusted contacts your travel plans.

  • Monitor local news for updates on safety concerns. 

  • Take care while withdrawing money from ATMs or using exchange offices (bureau de change). It’s generally safer to use ATMs during daylight hours inside shops or malls. Avoid withdrawing large amounts and watch who is around you while you are at an ATM. There are several ATM machines within Tecnológico de Monterrey.

  • Do not leave food and drinks unattended in bars and restaurants.

  • Drug-related violence in Mexico has increased over recent years. Do not become involved with drugs of any kind. While risks are lower in tourist areas, you should:

  • Take advice from local authorities or your hotel

  • Always be aware of your surroundings

  • Use reputable tourism or transport companies

  • Travel during the daytime where possible

Health

  • Only drink bottled water. 

  • Wash your hands frequently. 

  • Consult your doctor about the necessary vaccinations.

  • Consider travel insurance.

  • Smoking and e-cigarette bans:

  • It is illegal to bring e-cigarettes, vaping devices and solutions into Mexico or to buy and sell them. Customs officials will confiscate these items; and they could fine or detain you.

  • If you smoke or vape in a public place, you can get a fine of up to 3,000 Mexican pesos (about $150USD).

Planning

  • Research your destination thoroughly. 

  • Learn basic Spanish phrases. 

  • Check entry requirements and necessary documents like passport. 

Cultural Consideration

  • Respect local customs and traditions. 

  • Be mindful of tipping etiquette. 

  • Consider the local currency exchange rates. 

Transportation

  • Be cautious when using taxis, consider using ridesharing.

  • If driving, be aware of road conditions and traffic laws.
